Shoe sizes conversion: the short answer
EU shoe sizes are built on the Paris point (⅔ cm), UK and US sizes on the barleycorn (⅓ inch) — which is why there is no exact formula. As a rule of thumb: US men = UK + 1 and US women = UK + 2.5. Example: EU 42 is a UK 8, a US men's 9, a US women's 10.5 and a foot length of about 26.5 cm.

Foot length is the measured length of your foot, not the inside length of the shoe. The usual allowance is already built into the chart. Values follow the big sports brands; makers can be up to a full size off.
- EU – Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Spain …)
- UK – United Kingdom
- US Men – United States, men's shoes
- US Women – United States, women's shoes

Every size in detail
Measure your foot in four steps
- Measure in the evening: feet spread out over the course of the day. Wear the socks you will wear in the shoe.
- Paper against the wall: put a sheet of paper on the floor with one edge at the wall. Stand with your heel against the wall, weight on both feet.
- Mark the longest toe: hold the pen upright and mark the spot in front of your longest toe — which is not always the big toe. It is easiest with a second person helping.
- Measure and compare: measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
Shoe width: when the length is right but it still pinches
Width matters as much as length. German makers often mark it with letters: F (narrow), G (regular), H (wide) and K (extra wide). American brands use letters such as B, D, 2E or 4E — the more E, the wider. If a shoe pinches at the sides, a wider fitting usually helps more than a longer size.
Why shoe sizes differ so much between brands
Every maker builds shoes over its own lasts, which set the inside length and the shape. On top of that come different conversion charts: some brands offer half EU sizes (42.5), others only whole ones. Running shoes often come up small, because extra room is planned in at the toes. That is why your measured foot length in centimeters is the most reliable number — many brands list it in their charts, and in Japan it is even the official shoe size (Mondopoint).
Tips for getting the size right
A thumb's width of room
Standing up, there should be about a thumb's width (roughly 1 cm) in front of your longest toe. For hiking and running shoes, a little more.
Kids' shoes
Children's feet need room to grow: the inside length should be about 12 mm longer than the foot. Measure again every three months.
Half sizes
Between two sizes, take the larger one for sports and winter shoes, and the smaller one for leather shoes that stretch with wear.
