Men's sizes conversion: the short answer

For suit jackets, German, French and Italian men's sizes are usually identical. UK and US sizes state the chest in inches instead: UK/US = EU − 10. Example: men's size 50 is a UK/US 40 and usually an M; size 52 is a UK/US 42, or L.

Every size in detail

Regular, short or long?

German menswear uses three size ranges. The girths are the same; the lengths of sleeves, back and legs are not:

  • Standard sizes (44–64): for an average build.
  • Short (stout) sizes (22–32): for shorter, stockier men, with shorter sleeves and legs. Divide the standard size by 2 — size 25 is a 50.
  • Long (slim) sizes (86–126): for tall, slim men, with longer sleeves and legs. Standard size × 2 − 2 — size 98 is a 50.

Pants and jeans

For suit pants (US) / trousers (UK) and chinos, the German size is normally the same as the jacket size. Jeans, on the other hand, are nearly always sized in inches (W for the waist size, L for the leg length). You will find that conversion in the jeans size calculator.

The jacket and the pants of a suit do not have to be the same size: many makers sell them separately (“mix & match”), so you can pair a 52 jacket with 50 pants.

How a suit jacket should fit

  • The shoulder seam ends right on the shoulder bone — no bump, no overhang.
  • Buttoned up, a flat hand slides under the lapel without the button pulling (no “X” around it).
  • The sleeves end at the wrist, with about 1–1.5 cm of shirt cuff showing.
  • The collar rests against the shirt collar and does not stand away from the neck.

Tips for getting the size right

Shoulders decide

A tailor can take in the sleeves and the waist, but hardly the shoulders. Buy the size that fits your shoulders.

Italian brands

Some Italian makers cut a full size smaller. Compare the chest measurement in the size chart.

Letter sizes

M usually covers sizes 48 and 50, L covers 52 and 54. The exact split varies by brand.
