Baby & kids' sizes converted

From size 50 to 176: find out which size fits your child's age and height — and what “3T” or “4–5 Y” means in foreign shops.

Kids' sizes conversion: the short answer

In Germany and most of Europe, the kids' size is the child's height in centimeters: size 104 fits children up to about 104 cm. The sizes go up in 6 cm steps (50, 56, 62 … 176). US toddler sizes carry a “T”: 2T ≈ 92, 3T ≈ 98, 4T ≈ 104.

Ages are averages — children grow at different speeds. Height is what counts.

  • EU – Size = height in centimeters
  • Age – Approximate age
  • UK – United Kingdom (by age)
  • US – United States, Canada
  • Height – Matching height

Height matters more than age

The age on the label is only a rough pointer: two four-year-olds can be 10 cm apart. So measure your child regularly — babies about every four to six weeks, toddlers every three months. Our guide to measuring children explains how to manage it even with a wriggly one.

Babies grow fastest in their first year and then slow down. That is why it is worth buying baby clothes in small batches per size.

Combined sizes like 62/68 or 98/104

Knitwear, pajamas and stretchy fabrics are often sold in combined sizes. A “98/104” fits children from about 93 to 104 cm. That is handy, because the garment lasts longer — but it does sit a little loose at first.

Sizes in the UK and the US

  • The UK sizes children's clothes by age: “0–3 M” (months) or “4–5 Y” (years).
  • The US: babies by month (0–3 M up to 18–24 M), toddlers with a “T” (2T–5T), and school-age children by number (5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16).

Tips for getting the size right

Newborns

Size 50 is often outgrown within days. Many parents start with size 56 — newborns are around 50 cm long on average.

Between two sizes

Always take the larger one. Sleeves and legs can be rolled up; clothes that are too small just pinch.

Think about the season

Buying winter clothes in summer? Allow for the growing your child will do before the season starts — usually one size more.
